October 28, 2011 – 1:19 pm
Here’s a political statement we can all agree with: Gov. Susana Martinez and Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry have proclaimed Oct. 29-Nov. 5 as New Mexico Tango Week.
Tango Week kicks off tonight with a performance by 30 Argentine Tango dancers and 13 musicians at the KiMo Theatre in Albuquerque. The gala stage production, Por el amor al tango … For the love of tango … is at 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday (Oct. 28-29) and at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2. Visit the KiMo website to buy tickets, and the Qtango Dance Orchestra’s website for more information about the performance.
On the heels of the KiMo show comes the Albuquerque Tango Festival, Nov. 3-6. In its second year, the festival will feature more than 30 hours of milongas and 38 hours of classes on a huge, 3,000-square-foot dance floor. Last year’s inaugural festival attracted more than 500 participants. Get all of the details on the festival website, including a downloadable program and an on-line registration form.
Many Dance Station students are involved in Santa Fe’s active Argentine Tango community. Santa Fe is also home to several great instructors, some of them right here at Dance Station. If you’re interested in learning Argentine Tango, come and take one of our group Argentine Tango classes at 6:45 p.m. every Tuesday. Of course, you can always call the studio and schedule an intensive private lesson with an instructor. The studio is happy to support the Santa Fe Tango community by providing a venue for two milongas every month: Tango Corazon on the first Saturday and Noche de Bohemia on the fourth Saturday. Check out the Santa Fe Tango website for more information and a full schedule of events.
By the way…did you know the New Mexico state song, O Fair New Mexico, is a tango? (Here’s an instrumental version, although it lacks the balmy breezes and the sky of azure.)
October 28, 2011 – 7:06 am
The November calendar has been posted, and you can download your copy here. November classes start this Sunday, Oct. 30.
Take note of some special events happening in November:
- Ian Gillett, a D.C.-area ballroom dance instructor, will return for another coaching visit on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 19-20. Ian got rave reviews from students who took coaching lessons with him the first time he was here. He’ll be teaching two workshops on Saturday, Nov. 19: “Tango Fundamentals:” at 3:30 p.m., which will be open to all; and “Intermediate Viennese Waltz” at 4:15 p.m., for students with Viennese Waltz experience. Each workshop is just $20.
- We’re making our Introductory Drop-In Class free for the month of November. If you know someone who wants to learn some dance steps in time for holiday parties, this is the ideal class! They can just show up at 7:45 p.m. every Monday—no appointment needed. The Dance Station staff covers a different social dance every week. And students don’t need a partner.
- Finally, note that we’ll be closed on Thanksgiving, Nov. 24. There will be no lessons, group classes or Practice Party. You’ll probably be too stuffed with turkey to dance anyway.
See you on the dance floor!
