Frequently Asked Questions
About dancing at Dance Station
How do I get started?
Call to schedule an Introductory Lesson to work with a teacher and get your dancing questions answered. Or drop in to our Introduction to Social Dancing Class at 8:15 p.m. every Tuesday.
What do I wear?
Comfortable, casual clothing is appropriate. Most students come to the studio wearing whatever they wore to work or for their other daily activities. We do recommend wearing shoes with a leather sole; and ballroom dance shoes are best if you have them. And please don’t neglect your personal hygiene. After all, part of the fun of dancing is in getting up close and personal with your partners.
Do I have to have a partner?
Absolutely not. If you are taking private lessons, your teacher will be your partner. In group classes, we encourage students to dance with all partners because this helps them develop the essential skills of leading and following.
Do I have to have experience?
No! At Dance Station, we pride ourselves on transforming complete beginners into accomplished, confident social and even competitive dancers. Of course, our skilled teachers also train students who have extensive experience. Dance Station has programs and teachers for all students and experience levels.
What dance styles should I start with?
You will probably answer this question at your Introductory Lesson. There is no “right” dance to learn first. It depends on where you plan to go dancing and the kind of music you enjoy. If your goal is to have fun by social dancing in Santa Fe, then learning salsa, swing or country-western might be a good first step. If you are interested in dancing for fitness or as a hobby, then you have many options, from the common social dances to the traditional ballroom and Latin dances such as foxtrot, waltz, quickstep, rumba and cha-cha.
Do I have to have special shoes?
You can wear any comfortable pair of shoes, as long as they have smooth soles made of leather or similar materials. If you do intend to purchase shoes, a ballroom or Latin shoe would be the right choice.
