Want to pick up some dance tips and support a good cause? This month marks the 10th anniversary of Dance Because You Can, a weekend of workshops and dances in Albuquerque on April 24-26 to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The highlight is a black-tie-optional gala dinner and dance at the Sandia Resort & Casino.
The event kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, April 24 with a social dance at Graham Central Station, 4770 Montgomery Blvd NE in Albuquerque, sponsored by the Albuquerque Swing & Country Dance Club.
Workshops run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26, and will cover West Coast Swing, night club and Country-Western Two-Step, salsa and hustle, with a little cha cha and waltz thrown in for good measure. All workshops will take place at the Albuquerque Square Dance Center (where USA Dance holds its parties), 4915 Hawkins St NE.
Teaching the workshops will be three top couples: Toby and Harmony Munroe, owners of Colorado Dancesport in Littleton, Colo.; Michael and Dawne Kiehm, owners of the Starlight Dance Studio in San Diego, Calif.; and Damon and Lisa D’Amico of Houston, Texas, who have several country and swing titles to their names.
The gala dinner at the Sandia Resort & Casino, E. Rainbow Road in Albuquerque, begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 25, while those interested only in dancing can arrive around 9:30 p.m. Advance registration is required.
The advance cost of the workshops runs from $11 to $15, depending on how many you sign up for. To qualify for these rates, registrations must be postmarked by Saturday, April 18. Workshop fees at the door will be higher.
