Jeff’s Dance Tip – Keep A Dance Notebook

We take lessons and classes and soak up lots and lots of information. And then we forget. It is common for students to have this experience because of the sheer quantity of material they are exposed to in classes and lessons. It is important to remember too, that an idea or technique makes sense to us in the moment, but can be hard to recreate. Keeping a notebook as a dance diary can be a helpful way to jog the memory and help recreate the more elusive techniques. While just keeping a record might be helpful, here are a few tips to maximize your notebook’s usefulness:

  • Write in it immediately after your lesson or class.  The material is still fresh and you can ask your teacher for clarifications.
  • Break up your notebook into designated sections. For example, Ballroom, Latin, Swing, Dance Components, and Groupings make logical notebook sections. A section for technique exercises may also be useful.

The next step is to actually remember to look at your dance notebook. If you make it part of your regular routine, you will find it more useful to you. Try storing your notebook with your dance shoes. This way, every time you put your shoes on, you will be reminded to do a quick review of your last lesson.

The key is to keep it simple while keeping your dancing present. Not all practice is physical; you can benefit greatly from thinking through the techniques you learn so that you can create new dance habits. A good dance notebook will help you on this journey.
