Tips & Technique: Become a Desirable Dance Partner

dance-with-me-photo.jpgPartner dancing is a great way to spend time with other people. But if you want to become a sought-after dance partner, you should keep in mind a few rules of etiquette and manners.

At a social dance, it is your responsibility to become a comfortable partner for a wide variety of dancers.

Men must learn how to lead without pushing, pulling or forcing the follower. A good leader will never force his partner through a pattern that he can’t lead clearly, or that she can’t follow easily.

Ladies should develop their following skills so leaders don’t have to work so hard to get them to respond. It is never his responsibility to move you or “get you through” a pattern. Learn to respond quickly and accurately to the leader’s indications, and men will line up to dance with you.

Here’s one more tip that can help you stay popular at social dances: Never offer corrections or suggestions on the dance floor, unless the person you’re dancing with explicitly requests them.

Correcting someone comes across as rude, inconsiderate, and inappropriate–and could leave the other person wanting never to dance with you again.

After all, how many social dancers are experienced enough to “fix” another dancer on the dance floor? It could well be you that is in need of a fix!

No one likes to feel that he or she is a lousy dance partner, and we always remember the person who made us feel that way. If someone tries to give you unwanted advice, you can always say, “Thanks, but I already have a dance teacher.”

Finally, if you would rather not dance with someone who asks, you can always politely decline–although it is generally a good idea to sit that dance out and not accept an invitation from someone else.
