If dance is a conversation between two people, then connection is the language by which they communicate.
Learning to speak connection can be as frustrating as learning to speak Mandarin. But if you attain fluency in your connection, you will achieve fluidity in your dance.
For leaders, one important concept is the “connection triangle.” This concept helps you maintain a consistent frame position with your body and arms, and helps your partner stay in the proper position.
The three points of the “connection triangle” are your left hand, which holds your partner’s right hand; your right hand, which is placed on her back; and your center point (around your belly button).
Have you established your triangle? Good. Now comes the hard part: Maintain your triangle in a consistent shape while you dance, regardless of your steps. Don’t fold, bend or mutilate it!
If you can hold your “connection triangle,” an amazing thing happens: Your partner feels comfortable, never crushed or contorted. She will delight in always having her space, and in moving freely without being cramped.
Leaders, also pay particular attention to your right elbow. Always keep it slightly in front of your right shoulder. When it moves behind the plane of your back, your partner will feel squished and “stuck” behind you.
Think of holding your partner as you would a small bird. Too loose and she will slip away; too tight and you’ll crush her!
Maintain a “connection triangle” and you’ll be speaking connection in no time.
